Losen World Literature 2010-2011

Monday/Tuesday:

We are going to do the "No" drama in class.

After that, we will watch more of "Seven Samurai."

Homework:  Read the 6-page document entitled "Supreme Court of the United States." I will include it in the "Losennotes" just in case. Be prepared to answer the following questions (possibly in the form of a reading quiz):

1. What is the name of the document dated No. 210, Argued April 18, 1896-Decided: May 18, 1896. I should say, what are the two names (what the "v." in between?

2. What is the case about--specifically?

3. To what degree (especially percentage) is race a matter?

4. How did the court rule?

Next document: Finalized on May 17, 1954.

1. Who are the principals in this document (name v. name)?

2. Unlike the first document, the issue here focuses on what aspect of public life?

3. What does the document say about the reasons for the needed change? How has public education changed since 1896?

4. Which named Chief Justice delivered this opinion?

5. What does this justice say about the wrongness of applying the 1896 document to this situation?

6. What does this document tell you about public education back in 1896? Be specific.

7. In what ways was "Negro" education inferior to the educational opportunities available to whites? Think carefully about this one.

8. What does the justice say about the function of education in a democracy?

9. What does the document say about the importance of education in an individual's future--and to the future of the community?

10. What does education have to do with cultural values?

11. What did "Sweatt v. Painter" find?

12. How does the Chief Justice respond to this?

13. What does the justice say about the impact of "the sanction of law"? What does he mean by that?
